Tetris Couldn't Win at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification May Address This Issue

Each time a prominent honors show nears, you'll find a demand to include fresh award types to acknowledge unsung work and satisfy the passions of followers with niche passions.

A fellow writer made the case supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. The same goes for strategy board titles, which is a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward because like all blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification backing this proposal remains most pressing above others. This is the request: We need an award type for logic-based games.

Categorizing Game Types

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and inevitably spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents an essential concession within the realm of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify as a single art form.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these classifications successfully include numerous genres, making space possible for numerous titles.

Not so for logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Think about these recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. What category would fit them among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens outstanding logic titles released every year lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition for anything that year
  • Another imaginative release missed out during that ceremony
  • A beloved organization game got ignored recently
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent modest productions, however the design of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles count as most engaged experiences globally continuing this trend for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience competes with popular creative games for the title of most purchased experience; it also contends for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, while interacting with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. You could fill five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.

To emphasize again, these are games that otherwise have no home in important events. Brain-teaser creators operate at the hard edge game development, creating some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait decades.
